What’s Current: Meghan Murphy to appeal dismissal of case against Twitter

  • Journalist and Feminist Current founder Meghan Murphy is planning an appeal after her lawsuit against Twitter was dismissed. The platform banned Murphy’s account after she “misgendered” a trans-identified male, who identified himself using his male name on social media platforms. The same individual sued a number of female estheticians after declining to give him a Brazilian bikini wax. Donations are being accepted to support her case against censorship. Murphy states:

“The end result of the case would be that Twitter wouldn’t be allowed to randomly ban people for ideological or political positions, and that they be more clear about their rules and follow their own rules and follow through on their commitment to free speech.”

  • Europe’s top human rights court condemned Russia for “the unwillingness of the State to recognize the seriousness and scale of the problem of domestic violence.” The court ruled in favour of Valeriya Volodina, who was assaulted, stalked and kidnapped by her former partner, and concluded that Russia had deprived women of equal protection in front of the law.
  • Women in Singapore are being targeted by artificial intelligence programs which make them appear naked. The DeepNude app, which was removed by its developers, has resurfaced in Singapore. Photos are stolen from women’s social media accounts and uploaded to porn websites.
  • On Tuesday, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico City’s first elected female mayor, vowed to eradicate violence against women. More than 1,100 women were murdered in Mexico from January through May, according to government figures.
  • At least 15 women and children were killed in a massacre in Papua New Guinea. Victims included children aged one to 15, and eight women, two of whom were pregnant.
